Na Sombra do Maracanã
Maracanã Stadium also known as Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Currently it is undergoing renovation in preparation for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Along with the stadium itself, parts of the surrounding areas are also undergoing transformation. In July, 2011 we spoke with members of a nearby community affected by the changes.

This was a student film. This film exposes a darker side of urban progress. It is not wholly negative, yet it is true. It is depressing. But, the fact that we can do better and stand up for each other as people is still alive. The graffiti artist you will see in the film, French man, goes by Pleks --he reminds us graphically that urban developments are always in the context of people. Brazil is a grand country. This is a story that could happen (and does) anywhere in the world. Boa sorte a gente e tudo!
